Ringworm on private parts: treatment guide

Groin ringworm commonly affects the upper inner thighs and folds, where heat, moisture, and friction help fungus grow. It may produce an itchy, spreading, scaly border. The scrotal skin itself is less typical for classic jock itch; irritation, yeast, eczema, or another condition can look similar. A clinician can distinguish these patterns and check for infection elsewhere.

Avoid assuming that a rash near the genitals is sexually transmitted or that it is definitely ringworm. The diagnosis is based on the skin findings, symptoms, and response to appropriate care.

A clinician or pharmacist may recommend a topical antifungal for affected external skin; use the product only on areas named in its instructions and keep it away from internal genital surfaces. Gently wash and dry the folds, change out of damp clothing, choose loose breathable underwear, and avoid perfumed products. Do not use steroid cream by itself on a suspected fungal rash. Pause sexual contact if friction worsens soreness, and do not share towels.

Seek medical care if the rash is on the penis or scrotum, causes significant pain, forms blisters or sores, produces discharge, or fails to improve with directed treatment. Urgent assessment is needed for severe swelling, fever, rapidly spreading redness, or sudden testicular pain.

Ask which areas may safely receive the medicine, whether the rash needs testing, how long to continue treatment, and whether a partner, pet, or household item could be a source of reinfection.
