Ringworm may cause a circular or irregular scaly rash with an active-looking edge and a calmer centre. It can occur on many areas of the body and may itch, crack, or become sore from scratching. People can acquire it through skin contact or contaminated towels, clothing, bedding, equipment, or animals. Other rashes can look alike, so a visual guess is not a diagnosis.

Keep affected skin clean and dry, wash hands after touching it, and avoid sharing personal fabrics or sports equipment. Wash clothing, towels, and bedding that contact the rash as directed by a clinician. A topical antifungal treatment may help a limited skin infection. Oral antifungal treatment may be prescribed for broader, recurrent, or hard-to-reach infection after assessment.

Arrange assessment when the rash is spreading, involves the scalp or nails, keeps returning, or does not improve with suitable treatment. Prompt care is warranted for pus, severe pain, facial swelling, fever, or rapidly increasing redness. People with reduced immunity or diabetes should seek advice early rather than treating an uncertain rash alone.

Ask whether close household contacts or pets need evaluation, how to clean shared fabrics, and whether your rash requires testing. Tell the clinician about its onset, locations, possible contact with infected skin or animals, and medicines already tried.
