Right hand swollen in the morning: what to know

Look for swelling in the fingers, knuckles, wrist, or palm, and compare it with the left hand. Stiffness that eases with movement can occur with joint inflammation. Rheumatoid Arthritis commonly presents with swollen, tender joints and morning stiffness. A Distal Radius Fracture can cause hand swelling after a fall or wrist impact, even when attention is focused on the wrist. Redness, warmth, a wound, fever, or marked tenderness may indicate a problem needing prompt review. Appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Take off rings and watches if they feel tight. Elevate the hand briefly, then try slow finger movements within comfort. Avoid forceful squeezing and repeated lifting until you understand the pattern. Note whether swelling fades, stays unchanged, or returns on waking, along with pain, stiffness, numbness, colour change, and any recent injury. Recurrent one-sided swelling should be assessed.

Seek urgent care for rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, fever with redness or warmth, a deep wound, or inability to move the fingers. Following an injury, urgent assessment is needed if the hand is misshapen, pale, blue, cold, or numb. Sudden arm weakness, facial drooping, or speech trouble is an emergency.
