Right hand fingers swelling at night: what to know

Compare both hands and note whether swelling affects the fingers, knuckles, wrist, or whole hand. Tight rings, aching, warmth, stiffness, redness, or reduced grip add useful clues. Rheumatoid Arthritis commonly presents with swollen, tender joints and stiffness, while a Distal Radius Fracture can leave hand or finger swelling after a wrist injury. Repetitive use, a minor knock, heat, and keeping the hand down for long periods can also increase puffiness. A clinician can examine circulation, skin, sensation, and joint movement rather than relying on appearance alone.

Remove tight rings before swelling increases. Rest from forceful gripping, raise the hand on a cushion when resting, and move the fingers gently through a comfortable range. Do not use ice directly on skin, and stop any measure that causes colour change or numbness. Record when swelling starts, how long it lasts, and whether food, heat, activity, or sleep position seems related. Persistent or recurrent swelling deserves a clinical review.

Seek urgent care if swelling appears suddenly with severe pain, marked redness or warmth, fever, a wound, or rapidly worsening movement. After a fall or blow, urgent assessment is needed if the hand or wrist is misshapen, very tender, numb, pale, or cold. Emergency help is needed for sudden arm weakness, facial drooping, or speech difficulty.

Is the swelling centred in the joints or soft tissues? Could my wrist or a previous injury be contributing? Do I need an examination of circulation or nerves? What hand movements and supports are appropriate while it settles?
