What should you know about right hand feels like pins and needles?

A hand that tingles after sleeping on an arm or leaning on an elbow may improve when pressure is removed. Repeated symptoms can arise from irritation in the wrist, elbow, neck, or another nerve pathway. Peripheral neuropathy may affect sensation in the hands and feet; type 2 diabetes, vitamin B12 deficiency, and hypothyroidism are among the conditions a clinician may consider. Anxiety or panic can cause tingling with fast breathing and other physical sensations. Sudden one-sided tingling with weakness, facial droop, speech trouble, vision change, severe dizziness, or loss of balance can be a stroke or transient ischaemic attack presentation and requires emergency action.

Change position, gently move the fingers and wrist, and avoid leaning on the elbow or keeping the wrist bent for long periods. Check whether the sensation affects particular fingers, the whole hand, or travels up the arm. Arrange a review if it lasts, returns often, interferes with grip, or is joined by neck pain or symptoms in the feet. Do not stop prescribed medicines or start supplements without advice.

Call emergency services immediately for sudden pins and needles with weakness, facial asymmetry, difficulty speaking, new confusion, severe headache, vision loss, or trouble walking. Seek urgent care for a cold or blue hand, major injury, rapidly worsening numbness, or loss of bladder or bowel control.
