What should you know about right arm pain from shoulder to forearm?

Short answer
Right arm pain from the shoulder to the forearm may be referred from the neck or shoulder, or involve several muscles and tendons, so weakness and sensation changes need attention.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Track
- Note whether neck movement, overhead reach, gripping or posture changes the pain.
- Report promptly
- Weakness, numbness, pins and needles or a change in hand colour should not be ignored.
Why pain can travel
A shoulder tendon problem can make reaching overhead, dressing or lying on that side painful, with discomfort extending down the arm. Neck nerve irritation may send pain farther along the arm and may add pins and needles, numbness or weakness. Forearm tendon irritation, such as Tennis Elbow or Golfer's Elbow, is more tied to gripping and wrist movement. Pain that changes with posture, neck movement or arm position gives a clinician useful clues.
Practical first steps
Avoid heavy overhead work and repeated forceful gripping while the pain is active, but do not hold the arm completely still. Use short periods of comfortable movement through the shoulder, elbow and wrist. Adjust screen, desk and sleeping positions if they reproduce symptoms. A physiotherapy assessment can examine the neck, shoulder, arm strength and sensation and then progress exercises gradually. Do not stretch into sharp pain or persistent tingling.
When to get urgent help
Seek urgent help for sudden arm weakness or numbness, facial drooping, speech difficulty, severe chest pressure, breathlessness, faintness or unexplained sweating. Prompt assessment is also needed after major trauma, with a deformed limb, a cold or pale hand, or rapidly increasing swelling. Book a clinical review if symptoms persist, disturb sleep or limit ordinary tasks.
Questions for your clinician
Could the neck be referring pain into my arm? Do my strength or reflexes need checking? Which shoulder and neck movements are safe? What work or sleeping changes should I try, and when should imaging be considered?

Questions people ask
Can shoulder pain be felt in the forearm?
It can. Pain may travel away from the shoulder, although symptoms reaching the hand or involving weakness also raise concern for nerve irritation.
Should I exercise with pain along the arm?
Keep movement gentle and within comfort, and stop if exercise causes sharp pain, spreading tingling or new weakness.
