What should you know about riester otoscope?

During an ear check, the clinician selects a clean, suitable-sized speculum and gently positions it at the entrance of the ear canal. The light helps reveal swelling, irritation, wax, fluid, discharge or changes to the eardrum. An otoscope supports an examination; it does not by itself identify the cause of every ear symptom or replace the clinician’s history and physical assessment.

Do not put cotton buds, hairpins or other objects into the ear before an appointment. Tell the clinician about pain, reduced hearing, ringing, discharge, dizziness, recent swimming, injury or previous ear surgery. Arrange prompt medical assessment for severe or worsening ear pain, new hearing loss, blood or pus from the ear, marked dizziness, swelling behind the ear, or a high fever with a child who appears very unwell. An otoscope can help a clinician investigate these findings, but urgent symptoms should not be managed by trying to examine the ear yourself.
