What is rheumatoid arthritis?

The immune system mistakenly targets tissue around joints, causing inflammation. Over time, ongoing inflammation can produce pain, swelling, warmth, and stiffness, often in the hands, wrists, or feet. Some people notice finger stiffness, hand swelling, joint pain, joint stiffness, joint swelling, or morning joint stiffness. Symptoms may come and go, and their pattern can differ between people. RA is different from ordinary wear-and-tear arthritis, although both can cause pain.

Anti-inflammatory medication may help some people, but suitability depends on your health and other medicines.

Arrange a medical review for persistent swelling, repeated morning stiffness, or pain that limits daily tasks. Seek urgent help for a suddenly hot and severely painful joint with fever, new weakness or numbness, or breathing difficulty. Those features can signal infection or another problem needing rapid assessment rather than routine arthritis care.
