Keep a brief record of which joints hurt or swell, how stiffness changes through the day and how symptoms affect walking, work or hand use. Gentle movement and balanced activity may help you maintain function; avoid pushing through a clear flare. Protect sleep and plan rest between demanding tasks.

Arrange an appointment if symptoms persist, recur or interfere with daily activities. Bring a list of medicines and describe when the symptoms began. Do not start, stop or change anti-inflammatory medication without checking whether it is suitable for you.

Seek prompt medical review for ongoing swollen or stiff joints, worsening function or symptoms that repeatedly disturb sleep. Get urgent help for a suddenly hot, very swollen joint with fever or feeling acutely unwell. New weakness, numbness or a serious injury also needs prompt assessment.
