Rheumatoid arthritis and lumbar spine MRI

MRI uses magnetic fields to create detailed images without x-rays. In the lower back, it can help assess disc changes, narrowing around nerves, inflammation, infection, fractures, or other structural findings. A scan may be requested when pain persists, neurological symptoms appear, or the examination raises a specific concern. It does not by itself prove that rheumatoid arthritis is causing the pain: some findings may be unrelated to symptoms, while inflammatory disease can require blood tests, joint examination, and imaging of other areas. Tell the imaging team about metal implants, devices, pregnancy possibility, and difficulty lying still.

Bring a list of medicines, prior scans, and details of pain spread, weakness, numbness, and stiffness. Follow the facility's instructions about clothing and metal items. During the scan, you may need to remain still while the table moves through the scanner; tell staff if you feel distressed. Ask the requesting clinician what question the MRI is intended to answer and how the result will change treatment. Management may involve movement therapy, medicine review, or additional tests rather than the scan alone.

Seek emergency care for new bladder or bowel-control problems, numbness around the groin, rapidly worsening leg weakness, or inability to walk. Fever with severe back pain, or back pain after major injury, also needs urgent assessment. These situations require clinical attention even if an MRI has already been scheduled.
