Rheumatoid arthritis and joint pain

Inflammation irritates the joint lining and can make movement uncomfortable. RA often affects matching joints on both sides, such as the hands, wrists, feet, or knees, although patterns vary. Pain may be accompanied by hand swelling, reduced grip, or morning stiffness that improves only gradually with movement. A painful joint does not by itself establish RA; clinicians consider the full pattern and examination.

Note which joints hurt, whether rest or activity changes the pain, and whether swelling or stiffness appears with it. This information helps separate inflammatory pain from strain, wear-related problems, or an injury.

Use gentle movement within comfort, balance activity with rest, and avoid forcing a swollen joint. Heat may feel helpful for stiffness, while a cool pack wrapped in cloth can soothe a hot, swollen area for short periods. Discuss pain relief and anti-inflammatory medication with a clinician or pharmacist, particularly if you have stomach, kidney, heart, or blood-pressure concerns. Treatment aimed at RA inflammation may protect function over time.

Book an assessment when joint pain persists, keeps returning, or begins affecting sleep, work, walking, or hand function. Seek urgent care for a hot swollen joint with fever, sudden inability to bear weight, a major injury, or rapidly worsening pain. Prompt review is needed to check for infection, injury, or an active inflammatory problem.
