Is rheumatoid arthritis genetic?

RA is an immune-mediated condition in which the immune system mistakenly targets the lining of joints. Family history can raise susceptibility, while infections, smoking, hormones, and other environmental influences may also affect whether symptoms appear. A parent or sibling with RA does not determine your outcome, and many people diagnosed with RA have no close relative with it.

Watch for persistent joint pain, swelling, or stiffness, especially in several joints or after waking. Finger stiffness and hand swelling can be useful details to describe during an assessment.

Tell a clinician about relatives with RA, when symptoms began, which joints are involved, and whether stiffness is worse in the morning. Keep a brief symptom record and bring a list of medicines and supplements. Early assessment can distinguish inflammatory joint symptoms from other causes and may allow treatment to start before joint damage progresses. Anti-inflammatory medication may ease symptoms, but the choice and timing should be individualised.

Arrange a medical review if swelling, pain, or stiffness continues, returns repeatedly, or limits hand use, walking, sleep, or work. Seek urgent help for a suddenly very swollen, hot joint with fever, or for severe illness or weakness. These features need prompt assessment because infection and other urgent problems can resemble an inflammatory flare.
