Rheumatoid arthritis in the jaw

The jaw joint connects the lower jaw to the skull and is used for chewing and speaking. Inflammatory irritation there may cause aching with meals, morning tightness, tenderness over the joint, or a change in how the teeth meet. Jaw symptoms can occur alongside inflammation elsewhere, such as the hands or feet, but jaw pain also has dental, muscular, and other joint-related causes. A symptom does not prove that RA is responsible.

Choose softer foods temporarily, take smaller bites, and avoid gum, wide yawning, and prolonged clenching. A warm compress may feel soothing if heat does not worsen swelling. Arrange assessment with a doctor or dentist when pain persists, chewing changes, or mouth opening becomes restricted. Bring a list of other joint symptoms and medicines. Anti-inflammatory medication may be considered for some people, but suitability depends on medical history and other treatments.

Seek urgent medical or dental care if jaw swelling affects breathing or swallowing, the mouth becomes suddenly locked, or severe pain follows an injury. Prompt assessment is also sensible for fever with facial swelling, marked redness, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Do not assume these warning signs are simply an RA flare.

Ask whether the jaw joint seems inflamed, whether dental or muscle causes need checking, and whether imaging would clarify the problem. Discuss exercises only after the joint has been assessed, and ask how your wider RA treatment may relate to jaw symptoms.
