Rheumatoid arthritis and heart palpitations: what to know

Palpitations can feel like fluttering, pounding, racing, or skipped beats. Pain, fever, anaemia, dehydration, stress, thyroid problems, caffeine, and some medicines can cause them. Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory condition, but a new heartbeat sensation should not automatically be attributed to it. Tell the clinician whether it began after a medicine change and whether it occurs during rest or activity.

Record when the episodes start, how long they last, your activity, and associated symptoms. Reduce caffeine and nicotine while arranging medical advice, and drink fluids unless you have been told to restrict them. Do not stop prescribed rheumatoid arthritis treatment without guidance. A clinician may check your pulse, blood pressure, medicines, and heart rhythm.

Seek emergency care for palpitations with chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness, new confusion, or marked weakness. Arrange prompt assessment if episodes are new, recurrent, persistent, or associated with dizziness. A fast or irregular heartbeat during exertion also deserves medical review.
