Rheumatoid arthritis and fingernails

People with rheumatoid arthritis may notice brittle nails, ridges, colour changes, or slower-looking growth. These findings can also follow minor trauma, repeated wet work, nutritional problems, fungal infection, skin conditions, or medicine effects. A nail change alone does not establish rheumatoid arthritis or show how active the joint disease is. Look for changes in several nails, tenderness around the nail, separation from the nail bed, or thickening, and tell your clinician when they began.

Finger-joint swelling, pain, and stiffness can be more relevant clues to inflammatory arthritis than nail appearance. A clinician may inspect the nails and skin, examine your joints, and review medicines before recommending treatment.

Keep nails trimmed, dry your hands carefully, and use gloves for prolonged contact with water or cleaning products. Avoid biting, picking, or scraping beneath the nail. Do not apply antifungal or steroid products without advice, because the right treatment depends on the cause. Photographing a changing nail can help your clinician compare it over time. Mention supplements, new medicines, and any psoriasis-like skin patches during the appointment.

Seek prompt care if the skin around a nail becomes red, hot, swollen, or produces discharge, or if pain is increasing. Arrange urgent assessment for a new dark streak, bleeding, a nail that lifts without clear injury, or a rapidly spreading colour change. Fever or feeling unwell alongside nail inflammation also needs timely attention.

Ask whether the nail pattern suggests infection, skin disease, trauma, or a medicine effect; whether a sample is needed; and whether your joint symptoms change the assessment.
