Rheumatoid arthritis ear symptoms: what to know

Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory condition that commonly affects joints, including the small joints of the hands. In some people, inflammation may involve the jaw joint or nearby tissues, causing pain near the ear, pressure, clicking, or difficulty opening the mouth. Hearing changes, ringing, discharge, or dizziness are not specific to rheumatoid arthritis and may instead reflect wax, infection, medication effects, or an inner-ear problem. Keeping a note of whether symptoms occur with jaw movement, a flare, or a recent infection can help separate these possibilities.

A diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis does not by itself explain every ear complaint. New hand swelling, joint pain, or morning stiffness may provide useful context; these symptoms can be discussed alongside the ear concern.

Arrange a clinical review if an ear symptom persists, returns, or affects hearing or balance. A clinician may examine the ear canal, jaw movement, hearing, and other joints, then decide whether an ear specialist or rheumatology review is appropriate. Do not place cotton buds or unprescribed drops into the ear, particularly if there is pain or discharge. Take rheumatoid arthritis medicines exactly as prescribed and mention any recent change, because treatment decisions depend on your wider health.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden hearing loss, severe spinning dizziness, facial weakness, a rapidly swollen or very painful ear, fever with discharge, or a severe headache. Contact your treating team promptly if a flare brings marked jaw pain, difficulty eating, or rapidly worsening joint symptoms.

Ask: Could the pain be coming from my jaw rather than the ear? Do I need a hearing test or ear examination? Could any medicine be contributing? What changes should prompt an earlier review?
