Rheumatoid arthritis and dry eyes

Dry eyes can feel gritty, burning, tired, watery, or sensitive to light. Rheumatoid Arthritis may be associated with inflammation affecting the glands and tissues that help keep the eye surface moist. Watery eyes can still occur because irritation triggers reflex tearing, even when the tear film does not protect the surface well. Other causes include screen use, dry air, contact lenses, medicines, and eyelid problems. Joint Pain, Joint Stiffness, and Hand Swelling may accompany rheumatoid arthritis, but they do not explain every eye symptom.

Arrange an eye examination if dryness persists, affects reading or driving, or keeps returning. Until then, take screen breaks, avoid direct air from fans or vents, and consider protective glasses in dusty or windy settings. A pharmacist or eye professional can advise on lubricating drops and whether preservative-free options suit frequent use. Do not use leftover steroid eye drops or borrow someone else’s treatment. Tell your rheumatology clinician about the symptoms and all eye products you use.

Seek same-day eye care for significant pain, marked redness, new light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, a new spot on the cornea, or difficulty keeping the eye open. Sudden vision loss, severe headache with eye symptoms, or an eye injury requires emergency assessment. Prompt treatment matters because an inflamed or poorly protected eye surface can become damaged.
