Rheumatoid arthritis and Sjogren's syndrome: what to know

Rheumatoid arthritis commonly affects joints, while Sjogren's syndrome often affects moisture-producing glands. Dry eyes, dry mouth, dental problems, vaginal dryness, fatigue and joint discomfort may occur together. Fatigue is not specific to either condition, so clinicians may also check sleep, anaemia, thyroid problems, medication effects and disease activity.

A dry mouth can make eating, speaking and dental care uncomfortable. Persistent dry eyes may cause irritation or blurred vision. Assessment can include an examination, blood tests and eye or mouth tests, depending on your symptoms.

Use preservative-free lubricating eye drops or saliva substitutes only as advised, sip water regularly and arrange dental care for ongoing mouth dryness. Avoid smoke and overly dry environments when possible. Keep a record of swollen joints, stiffness, dryness and fatigue.
