What should you know about rheumatoid arthritis and carpal tunnel?

Rheumatoid arthritis can inflame the wrist and nearby tissues. That swelling may narrow the carpal tunnel, a passage where the median nerve travels into the hand. Carpal tunnel symptoms often include tingling, numbness, burning, or weakness in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger, sometimes worse at night. Rheumatoid arthritis more often causes joint pain, warmth, swelling, and stiffness.

Finger stiffness or hand swelling can have several causes. These symptoms alone do not show that rheumatoid arthritis or carpal tunnel is present.

Arrange an assessment if numbness persists, grip is weakening, objects are slipping, or wrist symptoms disturb sleep. The clinician may test sensation, strength, and wrist movement, examine for joint inflammation, and arrange nerve testing or imaging when useful.

Until reviewed, avoid prolonged wrist bending and take breaks from repetitive gripping. A night wrist splint may help some people when recommended, but it should not be tight or cause more numbness. Do not change rheumatoid arthritis treatment or rely on pain relief alone when nerve symptoms continue.

Seek urgent help for sudden hand weakness, facial drooping, speech trouble, severe neck or arm pain after injury, or a hand that becomes cold or blue. Seek prompt review for steadily worsening numbness or visible loss of thumb-muscle strength, because prolonged nerve compression can affect function.
