Short answer

Rhabdomyolysis symptoms can include severe muscle pain, weakness, swelling, tenderness, and dark urine, with urgent assessment needed for warning signs.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Muscle signs
Pain, tenderness, weakness, and swelling can occur together or separately.
Urine sign
Dark or reduced urine is a warning symptom.

Symptoms to recognise

Rhabdomyolysis happens when muscle tissue is damaged and releases muscle proteins into the bloodstream. Symptoms may begin after unusually intense exercise, a crush injury, prolonged immobility, heat illness, seizures, infection, or a medicine reaction. The affected muscles can ache intensely, feel tender or swollen, and become weak. Some people notice difficulty walking, climbing stairs, lifting an object, or changing position. Urine may become dark, and urine output may decrease. Nausea, vomiting, fever, fatigue, or confusion can occur when the illness is more severe. Symptoms vary, and dark urine is not present in every case.

What to do if you notice them

Stop strenuous activity and arrange prompt medical assessment if symptoms are severe, unusual, or worsening. Sip fluids if you are awake and able to drink, unless a clinician has restricted your fluids; do not use hydration as a substitute for assessment. Tell the healthcare professional what happened beforehand, how quickly symptoms developed, your urine changes, and all medicines and supplements. Testing commonly checks muscle injury, kidney function, urine, and mineral balance.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent care for dark or very little urine, severe or increasing muscle pain, profound weakness, rapidly growing swelling, faintness, confusion, breathing trouble, or repeated vomiting. These symptoms can signal significant muscle breakdown, kidney stress, dehydration, or a dangerous complication. A person who is confused, faint, or unable to drink should not drive themselves.

Questions to ask

Could my symptoms be rhabdomyolysis or another muscle problem? Which tests will confirm the cause? How should I manage fluids and activity? What changes mean I should return immediately?

Questions people ask

Can rhabdomyolysis occur without dark urine?

Yes. Urine can look normal, so severe muscle pain, weakness, or swelling still deserves medical assessment.

Is soreness after a workout always rhabdomyolysis?

No. Familiar, gradually improving soreness is often different, but unusually severe or progressive symptoms should be checked.
