Rhabdomyolysis and the heart

In rhabdomyolysis, injured muscle releases cell contents into the bloodstream. Electrolytes, especially potassium, can shift and interfere with the heart's electrical activity. Fluid changes and kidney impairment may add strain. This does not mean every episode causes a heart problem, but it explains why clinicians may check an electrocardiogram, blood chemistry, kidney function, and vital signs.

Chest symptoms can have several causes, including a separate heart condition, so they should not be attributed to muscle soreness without assessment. Tell the clinician about palpitations, dizziness, fainting, breathlessness, chest discomfort, and any history of heart or kidney disease.

Stop intense exercise and seek medical guidance if rhabdomyolysis is suspected. Do not take electrolyte supplements or large amounts of fluid unless a clinician recommends them; treatment depends on blood results and your medical history. Bring a medicine and supplement list, including products used for workouts. Keep follow-up appointments so electrolyte and kidney changes can be checked as the muscle injury settles.

Call emergency services for chest pressure, severe breathlessness, collapse, fainting, confusion, or a fast, pounding, or irregular heartbeat. Seek urgent assessment for severe muscle pain, swelling, marked weakness, dark urine, or much less urine than usual. These symptoms can accompany electrolyte disturbance or kidney complications and should be assessed promptly.
