What should you know about retropharyngeal calcific tendinitis?

Short answer
Retropharyngeal calcific tendinitis causes sudden upper-neck pain and stiffness when calcium deposits inflame a nearby tendon.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main area
- Upper neck and the tissues in front of the spine
- Typical concern
- Pain with neck movement or swallowing
What it means
Despite its name, this is a tendon inflammation in front of the upper spine, not an infection in the throat. Pain may be felt in the neck, back of the throat, or head, and turning the neck or swallowing can be uncomfortable. A clinician may assess your movement, throat, nerves, and general health, then use imaging to distinguish the condition from infection, injury, or another cause of neck pain. Calcium deposits in the shoulder are a different presentation of calcific tendinitis; details are available under Calcific Tendinitis.
What you can do
Arrange a medical assessment for new severe neck pain, particularly when swallowing or neck movement is affected. Treatment commonly focuses on rest, prescribed or recommended anti-inflammatory medicine when suitable, and gradual return to comfortable movement. Physiotherapy may help restore neck mobility after the acute pain settles. Your clinician may discuss a Cortisone Injection in selected situations; Shockwave Therapy and Shoulder Arthroscopy are not automatically appropriate for pain in this location.
When to seek care
Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, rapidly increasing neck swelling, fever, confusion, new weakness, or severe headache with neck stiffness. These features can signal infection, airway trouble, or a neurological problem and need prompt examination. If pain remains intense, keeps returning, or limits eating and drinking, contact a clinician without delaying assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which examination or scan is needed, whether an infection has been excluded, which medicines are safe with your health history, and when gentle neck movement should begin. You can also ask what symptoms should prompt an emergency visit and how recovery will be monitored.

Questions people ask
Is retropharyngeal calcific tendinitis the same as a throat infection?
No. It is inflammation around a tendon, but examination and sometimes imaging are needed because infection can cause similar neck and swallowing symptoms.
Can physiotherapy help?
Gentle, guided movement may help after the acute pain is controlled; the timing should be set by the clinician who assessed you.
