What does retinoblastoma mean in children?

The retina is the light-sensing layer at the back of the eye. Retinoblastoma develops when retinal cells grow out of control. It can affect one eye or both eyes, and the appearance and extent of disease vary between children. A white reflection in the pupil, a new eye misalignment, a change in vision, redness or swelling can be signs, although these findings can also have other causes.

Doctors assess the eyes carefully, often while the child is asleep under anaesthesia, and may use ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging. They consider the tumour’s position, size, number and whether it has stayed within the eye.

Arrange prompt review by a paediatric ophthalmology and oncology team if a clinician recommends it or if a concerning eye sign persists. Bring photographs showing when the change began and tell the team about any family history of childhood eye tumours.

Treatment aims to control the tumour while preserving life, the eye when possible and useful vision. Options may include medicines delivered through the bloodstream or directly to the eye, laser or freezing treatments, and surgery in selected situations. The plan depends on the eye involved, tumour features and response to treatment.

Seek prompt medical assessment for a persistent white pupil reflection, a new squint, sudden visual difficulty, a painful or swollen eye, or a child who becomes unusually sleepy or unwell. After treatment, contact the team urgently for fever, severe pain, worsening swelling, or a sudden change in behaviour or vision.
