What should you know about reticular lichen planus oral?

The white lines may form a net-like or lace-like pattern on the inner cheeks, gums, tongue or other mouth lining. Many people notice little discomfort, while others develop burning, tenderness or sensitivity to spicy, acidic or rough foods. A clinician may examine the mouth closely because several conditions can produce white patches, and the appearance can change over time. Lichen planus can also affect skin, where itchy skin or skin bumps may occur; these findings do not prove that a mouth change has the same cause.

Arrange an oral examination if the pattern is new, persistent or repeatedly sore. Use a soft toothbrush, gentle toothpaste and careful cleaning around the gums. Avoid tobacco and reduce foods that clearly trigger stinging. Do not scrape the lines or apply leftover medicines inside the mouth. Depending on the examination, treatment may include a prescribed corticosteroid applied to the affected lining; widespread or difficult disease may prompt discussion of oral corticosteroid treatment. Regular dental and medical review can document changes.

Seek prompt assessment for a mouth ulcer that does not heal, a firm area, bleeding without an obvious cause, increasing pain, difficulty swallowing, or a patch that becomes thicker, redder or visibly different. Urgent help is appropriate if swelling interferes with breathing or swallowing. These warning signs call for examination; they do not establish a diagnosis on their own.

Ask whether the appearance is consistent with reticular oral lichen planus, whether another test or biopsy is needed, which foods or products to avoid, how a prescribed medicine should be applied, and how often the mouth should be checked.
