Removing cradle cap with coconut oil

Cradle cap is a common form of infantile seborrheic dermatitis. It can cause greasy or dry scales on the scalp and sometimes affects the eyebrows, behind the ears or skin folds. It is not caused by poor hygiene. Coconut oil may loosen adherent scale, but it does not address every cause of a persistent rash and may irritate some babies.

Patch-test a tiny amount on a small area first. If the skin remains comfortable, massage a thin layer onto the scalp, leave it for a short period, then wash with a mild baby shampoo. Loosened scale can be lifted with a soft brush; never scrape or pull. Avoid getting oil in the eyes, and stop if redness or bumps appear. Emollient therapy may be discussed with a clinician; persistent inflammation may need topical antifungal treatment. Contact a clinician if the scalp is very red, swollen, cracked, oozing, smelly or painful, if hair loss is marked, or if the rash spreads beyond the scalp. Seek prompt advice if your baby seems unwell or the skin worsens after applying oil.

Ask whether the appearance fits cradle cap, which cleanser and emollient are suitable, how often to wash the scalp, and whether another condition should be considered if scales recur or involve other body areas.
