What should you know about remedy for vomiting blood?

Blood may look bright red, dark brown, or like coffee grounds. It can come from the oesophagus, stomach, or the first part of the small intestine. Causes include irritation, ulcers, inflammation, enlarged veins, or a tear after forceful vomiting. Oesophageal Cancer and Stomach Cancer are possible medical causes, but vomiting blood does not by itself identify the cause.

Stop eating and drinking until a clinician advises you, especially if you may need a procedure. Sit upright or lie on your side if you feel faint, and ask someone to stay with you. Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen, or another medicine that can increase bleeding unless a clinician has specifically told you to use it. Bring a list of medicines, including blood thinners, and describe the colour and amount of blood.

Seek emergency care immediately for any vomiting of blood, particularly with dizziness, fainting, confusion, clammy skin, severe weakness, black stools, chest pain, or abdominal pain. Call emergency services rather than driving if you feel faint or the bleeding is ongoing. Even a small amount needs prompt assessment because the visible blood may not reflect the total loss.
