Remedy for Itchy Eyes

Itchy eyes often occur when the surface of the eye reacts to pollen, dust mites, pet dander, cosmetics, or another irritant. Allergic conjunctivitis commonly causes itching, watering, and redness in both eyes, sometimes with sneezing or a blocked, runny nose. Dryness, contact-lens irritation, or infection can feel similar. Thick discharge, significant pain, or light sensitivity needs a different assessment than straightforward allergy symptoms.

Place a clean cool compress over closed eyes and wash your hands before touching your face. Do not rub, because rubbing can increase swelling and scratch the eye surface. Keep windows closed when outdoor allergens are high, wash your face after exposure, and keep bedding clean. Stop using eye makeup or contact lenses until the irritation settles. A pharmacist can advise about lubricating drops or allergy medication; do not share eye drops or use someone else’s prescription.

Get urgent medical care for severe eye pain, sudden vision change, marked light sensitivity, an eye injury, or swelling that affects breathing. Arrange an assessment for one-sided persistent redness, pus-like discharge, a contact-lens-related red eye, or symptoms that do not improve. A clinician can check the cornea and decide whether allergy, infection, dryness, or another cause is responsible.
