Remedy for Brittle Nails

Short answer
Brittle nails usually need protection from repeated wetting and drying while an underlying cause is checked if changes persist.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common triggers
- Water, detergents, solvents, and manicure trauma
- Do not assume
- A brittle nail is not automatically a fungal infection
Why nails become brittle
Brittle nails may split, peel, flake, or break at the free edge. Frequent water exposure, detergents, solvents, manicure products, filing, and picking can weaken the nail plate. Skin inflammation, nutritional problems, thyroid disorders, some medicines, and ageing can also contribute. A fungal nail infection may cause thickening, yellow or white colour, crumbling, or separation from the nail bed, but appearance alone cannot diagnose it.
Protect the nail plate
Keep nails short and file rough edges in one direction. Wear gloves for cleaning and prolonged wet work, dry hands and nails carefully, and apply moisturiser to the nails and surrounding skin after washing. Pause harsh removers, aggressive buffing, and extensions while the plate recovers. Avoid biting or peeling loose layers. Do not start antifungal medicine or supplements without confirming the cause; treatment differs between infection, irritation, and a wider health issue. Take a photograph as the nail grows so changes can be compared at an appointment.
When to seek care
Arrange medical review if one nail changes suddenly, the nail becomes painful or swollen, pus develops, a dark streak changes, or several nails become abnormal without an obvious irritant. See a dermatologist when thickening, crumbling, or separation suggests Nail Fungus, because a sample may be needed before treatment. Prompt care is sensible for diabetes, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the nail pattern suggests irritation, infection, inflammation, or a systemic cause; whether testing is needed; and which products or activities to stop. Ask how long healthy nail growth may take and which warning changes should be reported.

Questions people ask
Can moisturiser help brittle nails?
Regular moisturiser can reduce dryness around the nail and support a protective routine, especially after handwashing.
Should I take biotin for splitting nails?
Discuss supplements with a clinician first; the benefit depends on the cause, and supplements can interfere with some tests or medicines.
