Remedies to stop hiccups

Short answer
Most short episodes of hiccups settle on their own; slow breathing, small sips of water and avoiding triggers may help, while persistent hiccups need medical review.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Try first
- Slow breathing, small sips of water and trigger avoidance
- Keep a note
- Record timing, food triggers and associated digestive symptoms
Why hiccups happen
A hiccup is an involuntary spasm of the diaphragm followed by quick closure of the voice box. Eating quickly, a large meal, fizzy drinks, alcohol, sudden temperature changes or laughter can irritate the reflex. Acid Reflux or Gastritis may also irritate the upper digestive tract and contribute to repeated episodes.
Measures worth trying
Sit upright, breathe slowly, and take small sips of cool water. Eat slowly and choose smaller meals for a while; avoid fizzy drinks, alcohol and foods that clearly trigger episodes. Do not try frightening someone, swallowing unsafe objects, or forceful breath-holding.
If episodes keep returning, note when they start, what you ate or drank, and whether you have heartburn, nausea or abdominal pain. A clinician can assess possible causes and may consider Acid Reflux Medication when reflux is part of the pattern.
When to seek care
Arrange medical advice when hiccups last unusually long, repeatedly disturb sleep or eating, or occur with vomiting, severe abdominal pain, weakness, confusion or breathing difficulty. Seek urgent help for sudden neurological symptoms or severe chest pain.
Questions for your doctor
Could reflux or another condition be triggering these episodes? Could any of my medicines contribute? Which treatment is suitable, and what symptoms should prompt urgent review?
