What it means

Kissing can temporarily irritate the lips through pressure, friction, saliva, or contact with a product such as lip balm, food or cosmetics. Swelling may also be an allergic reaction, including Angioedema, especially when it appears suddenly or affects other areas.

What to do

Stop kissing and remove any new lip product. Rinse gently with water, apply a cool compress wrapped in clean cloth, and avoid licking, rubbing, spicy foods and heat while the area settles. Do not apply an unfamiliar cream inside or around the mouth. If symptoms are mild but persist, arrange a clinical assessment.

Call emergency services for difficulty breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, trouble swallowing, faintness, or swelling of the tongue or throat. Seek prompt medical advice for rapidly increasing swelling, hives, vomiting, severe pain, blisters or signs of infection.
