Short answer

To relieve itchy skin during pregnancy, use a fragrance-free moisturiser, lukewarm showers, gentle cleansers, loose clothing, and cool compresses; contact a maternity clinician before using medicines or if itching is severe, widespread, or involves the palms and soles.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

First step
Use a fragrance-free moisturiser after lukewarm washing.
Avoid
Hot showers, fragranced products, and scratching.
Prompt review
Severe itch, no rash, or itch on the palms and soles.

What itchy skin can mean

Hormonal changes and stretching skin can make the skin barrier drier and more reactive. Heat, sweat, wool, fragranced products, and frequent hot washing can intensify the sensation. Itching can also accompany eczema or another skin condition, such as Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Hives, or Psoriasis. A skin yeast infection or Scabies may need specific treatment rather than moisturiser alone.

Itching without an obvious rash, particularly on the palms or soles and worse at night, should be discussed promptly with your maternity team. They may decide whether you need an examination and pregnancy-safe tests. Do not assume that a new itch is only ordinary dry skin.

What you can do

Apply a plain, fragrance-free emollient several times a day, especially straight after washing. Keep showers short and lukewarm, pat the skin dry, and choose a mild, fragrance-free cleanser only where needed. Wear loose cotton layers, keep the room comfortably cool, and place a cool damp cloth over an itchy area for brief periods.

Try not to scratch: smooth nails and gently pressing or tapping the area can reduce skin damage. Stop any newly introduced soap, detergent, lotion, or perfume if the timing fits. Ask a pharmacist, obstetric clinician, or dermatologist before taking an antihistamine, applying a steroid cream, or using herbal products, because the suitable choice depends on your pregnancy stage, symptoms, and medical history.

When to seek care

Contact your maternity clinician promptly if the itch is intense, spreading, persistent, disturbing sleep, or present without a clear rash. Seek urgent help for itching with yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, marked nausea, or feeling unwell. A new rash with facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or faintness needs emergency care.

Arrange a skin assessment if there are cracks, oozing, crusting, pus, fever, painful redness, or a rash affecting other household members. These features can point to infection, allergy, or a contagious condition and may require treatment chosen for pregnancy.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Could this pattern of itching need pregnancy-related testing? Which moisturiser or medicine is suitable for me? What symptoms should prompt same-day contact? Should I be checked for eczema, allergy, infection, or another skin condition?

Questions people ask

Can I use an anti-itch cream while pregnant?

Check with a pharmacist or maternity clinician first. The active ingredient, strength, area treated, and stage of pregnancy all affect whether a product is appropriate.

Why is itching without a rash worth mentioning?

It can have causes beyond dry or irritated skin. Itching that is severe, widespread, worse at night, or concentrated on the palms and soles deserves prompt maternity advice.

Does pregnancy itching always mean a serious problem?

No. Dryness and irritation are common explanations, but the pattern and accompanying symptoms determine whether an assessment is needed.
