What should you know about reinforcing plaster of paris?

Plaster of Paris is shaped around a limb and hardens into a supportive shell. Reinforcement may involve extra plaster layers, a stronger edge, or added support around areas that receive more bending or pressure. The clinician chooses the cast design according to the injury, body area, swelling, and whether the cast is temporary or intended to remain during healing.

A reinforced cast should still allow the fingers or toes to remain visible when possible. It is designed to limit unwanted movement, not to make the limb ready for impact or weight-bearing before the treating team permits it.

Keep the cast dry unless your care team has specifically provided a waterproof plan. Do not cut, pad, or insert objects inside it.
