Short answer

Regular spotting after a period deserves attention because hormonal changes, contraception, infection, or changes in the cervix or womb can all cause it.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it may mean

Spotting is light bleeding outside the expected flow of menstruation. It may happen as hormone levels shift, after starting or missing hormonal contraception, or around ovulation. Irritation after sex, vaginal or cervical infection, and benign growths such as polyps or fibroids are other possibilities. Chlamydia can cause bleeding between periods, sometimes with pelvic discomfort or unusual discharge. Less commonly, cervical dysplasia, cervical cancer, or womb cancer can present with abnormal bleeding; a symptom does not establish any of these diagnoses.

A clinician may ask when the spotting began, how often it appears, whether it follows sex, and whether pregnancy is possible. Examination and testing are chosen according to your age, history, contraception, and associated symptoms.

What to do next

Record the dates, colour, amount, triggers, pain, discharge, and medicines or contraception around each episode. Arrange a routine appointment if the pattern keeps returning, is new for you, or continues after a contraception change. Take a pregnancy test when pregnancy is possible, and mention the result to the clinician. Do not stop prescribed contraception without advice. Your assessment may include a pregnancy test, infection testing, a cervical examination, or imaging if the history points that way.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for heavy bleeding, faintness, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, fever, or bleeding during a possible pregnancy. Prompt assessment is also sensible when spotting follows sex repeatedly, occurs after menopause, or comes with a new lump, marked fatigue, or unexplained weight change. These warning signs guide urgency; they do not identify a single cause.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what causes fit your timing and symptoms, whether you need infection or pregnancy testing, and whether cervical screening or an ultrasound is appropriate. Ask which bleeding changes should lead you to return sooner.

Questions people ask

No. It can have a straightforward hormonal or contraceptive explanation, but recurring or new bleeding should be assessed in context.

What should I bring to an appointment?

Bring your bleeding record, medication and contraception details, pregnancy-test information if relevant, and any associated pain or discharge symptoms.
