What should you know about red watery eyes and runny nose?

Red watery eyes with a runny nose can result from allergies, a viral infection, or irritation, so the pattern and accompanying symptoms help guide the next step. Itching, repeated sneezing, and symptoms that appear around dust, pets, or pollen fit an allergic pattern. A sore throat, cough, tiredness, or fever can occur with a viral illness such as a common cold, influenza, or COVID-19. Burning or watering after smoke, strong fragrance, wind, or another irritant may settle after exposure stops. These symptoms do not identify one condition on their own.

Allergic rhinitis commonly causes a clear, watery nasal discharge together with itchy, red, or watery eyes. Seek urgent medical help for severe eye pain, a sudden change in vision, marked light sensitivity, an injury or chemical splash, or swelling around the eye. Get emergency help if breathing becomes difficult, your lips or tongue swell, or you feel faint after a possible allergic exposure. Arrange medical advice if one eye is very red and painful, discharge is thick or persistent, symptoms are worsening, or the illness is not settling.
