Red spotting after your period: what it can mean

Red spotting after your period can have several causes, and repeated or unexpected bleeding deserves a clinical assessment. A small amount may be leftover menstrual blood or a temporary hormone shift, but bleeding between periods can also reflect irritation, infection, a polyp, fibroid, or a change in the cervix or womb lining.

Note when the spotting starts, how long it lasts, and whether it follows sex, missed contraception, or a new medicine. Cervical Dysplasia and Cervical Cancer can present with bleeding between periods, while Chlamydia may cause bleeding alongside unusual discharge, pelvic discomfort, or pain when urinating. Endometrial Polyps and Uterine Fibroids can also disturb the usual pattern. These possibilities cannot be sorted out from colour alone.

Use a liner if helpful and record the amount, colour, dates, pain, discharge, and any pregnancy possibility. Arrange a routine appointment if the spotting returns, continues, happens after sex, or is new for you. A clinician may ask about contraception and cycle history and may offer an examination, pregnancy test, infection testing, or imaging based on your symptoms.

Seek urgent medical help for heavy or rapidly increasing bleeding, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, faintness, marked weakness, fever, or bleeding with a positive pregnancy test. Prompt assessment is also sensible after menopause or when spotting comes with persistent pelvic pressure or unexplained weight change.

Ask which causes fit your timing and symptoms, whether you need a pregnancy or infection test, and whether cervical screening is due. You can also ask what changes should prompt earlier review and whether a scan is appropriate.
