Red spots that look like chicken skin

Keratosis pilaris commonly creates tiny, firm bumps with a sandpaper texture, particularly on the outer upper arms, thighs, or cheeks. They may look red, skin-coloured, or darker than nearby skin and are often mildly itchy or symptom-free. Folliculitis can look similar but more often has tenderness, itch, or pus around individual follicles, especially after heat, sweating, or friction.

The appearance can vary with skin tone and dryness. A clinician can distinguish these patterns by examining the bumps and asking when they began.

Use a gentle cleanser and apply a plain moisturiser regularly, especially after bathing. Products containing urea, lactic acid, or salicylic acid may smooth rough plugs for some people, but introduce one product gradually and stop if burning or a persistent rash develops. Avoid picking, harsh scrubs, and very hot water.

See a clinician if bumps become painful, ooze, crust, spread quickly, or interfere with sleep, or if the diagnosis is uncertain. Urgent care is appropriate for swelling with breathing trouble, fever with a rapidly worsening rash, or extensive blistering.
