Red Spots and Itchy Skin: Possible Causes

Short answer
Red spots with itchy skin may reflect dryness, eczema, contact irritation, hives, infection, or another inflammatory condition, and the pattern helps guide care.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Useful clues
- Timing, night-time itch, scale, raised welts, cracks, and exposure pattern.
- Protect skin
- Moisturise, cool rather than scratch, and avoid new irritants.
How itch and pattern fit together
Asteatotic Eczema often affects dry, cracked skin, while Atopic Dermatitis can produce recurring itchy, inflamed patches. Contact Dermatitis may follow contact with a product, metal, plant, or chemical and often matches the exposure area. Hives are raised welts that can appear and fade in different places. Scabies can cause intense itch, often worse at night, with spots around the finger webs, wrists, waist, or other typical sites. Psoriasis may form thicker, scaly plaques; a moist fold can support a Skin Yeast Infection. Lichen Planus has a different, often persistent pattern.
Comfort measures
Keep nails short and use a cool compress instead of scratching. Bathe briefly with lukewarm water, use a fragrance-free cleanser, and apply a bland moisturiser while skin is still slightly damp. Stop newly introduced cosmetics, detergents, or topical medicines until you receive advice. Wash clothing and bedding normally, but do not share personal items if scabies is possible. Avoid applying strong steroid mixtures or antiseptics without a diagnosis.
When to seek care
Seek emergency help for swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, breathing trouble, dizziness, or faintness. Arrange urgent assessment for fever, severe tenderness, rapidly spreading redness, blisters, skin peeling, eye or mouth involvement, or pus. Make a routine appointment for itch that disrupts sleep, affects household contacts, keeps returning, or does not improve with gentle skin care.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the distribution suggests eczema, contact irritation, hives, infection, or scabies; which products are safe; and whether close contacts need assessment.
