Red spot on the roof of the mouth: what should you know?

Hot food, a sharp food edge, dental appliances, tobacco exposure, or a viral or fungal infection can irritate the palate. Mouth cancer may present as a red or white patch, an ulcer, a lump, or a sore area that does not heal. Appearance alone cannot confirm cancer, and a short-lived spot may have a non-cancerous cause.

Note whether the area bleeds, feels numb, becomes firm, spreads, or causes pain with chewing or swallowing. Check for a neck lump, a loose tooth without a clear reason, voice change, or difficulty opening the mouth. A dentist or doctor can inspect the whole mouth and decide whether further testing is needed.

Avoid hot, sharp, spicy, or acidic foods if they sting, and stop smoking or tobacco use. Do not scrape the spot or apply household chemicals. Arrange a dental or medical examination if it remains, enlarges, repeatedly returns, or has no clear injury behind it.

Take a clear photograph for comparison and note when it appeared. Bring details of dental work, medicines, tobacco or alcohol use, and any swallowing or speech changes to the appointment.

Seek prompt assessment for bleeding that does not stop, increasing pain, a firm lump, numbness, or an area that interferes with eating, swallowing, or speaking. Get urgent help for major swelling with breathing difficulty. A persistent mouth change should be checked even if it is painless.

Ask whether the spot looks irritated, infected, or otherwise unusual, whether a dental cause is present, and whether a specialist examination or biopsy is appropriate. Ask what changes to photograph and when to return if it does not clear.
