Red sore lump under arm: what should you know?

Pain, redness, and warmth can occur with an infected hair follicle, an abscess, an irritated cyst, or friction after shaving. A nearby lymph node may become tender while the immune system responds to an infection in the arm or chest. Breast cancer can present with an underarm lump, while lymphoma can present with enlarged lymph nodes; soreness and redness alone cannot distinguish these conditions from a skin problem.

Look for a central spot, drainage, a recent cut, vaccination, insect bite, or new product. Also note breast swelling, nipple or skin changes, fever, or other enlarged nodes. A clinician may need to examine the lump rather than rely on how it looks.

Wash gently, keep the area dry, and avoid deodorant, shaving, tight clothing, and friction until the skin is calmer. Do not lance or squeeze the lump, because this can push infection deeper or injure the skin. A warm compress can be used briefly if it feels soothing.

Book an assessment when pain or redness is not settling, the lump is increasing, or it returns in the same area. Record its size and any drainage, and tell the clinician about recent skin injuries or illness.

Get same-day care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, worsening swelling, severe pain, pus, red streaks, or weakness. Seek urgent help if you develop breathing or swallowing difficulty. Even without these signs, arrange prompt review for a hard or fixed lump, a lump that persists after the soreness improves, or a new breast change.

Ask whether the lump appears to be in the skin or deeper, whether it needs drainage or medication, and whether the breast and lymph nodes should be checked. Ask how to recognise recurrence and when a scan or tissue test would be considered.
