What should you know about red scaly skin around eyes?

The eyelids can react to cosmetics, cleansers, hair products, nail products, fragrances, or rubbing. Seborrheic dermatitis may affect the eyelid margins and nearby eyebrows, while psoriasis can create persistent scaly plaques. Ringworm is less common around the eye but may produce an enlarging scaly patch. Tinea versicolor usually affects the trunk rather than the eyelids. Itch suggests irritation or allergy; pain, marked swelling, discharge, or vision change raises greater concern.

Because eyelid skin is thin, a rash there should not be treated with leftover steroid or antifungal cream without professional guidance. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Stop newly introduced eye-area products and avoid eye makeup and contact lenses while the skin is inflamed. Rinse gently with clean lukewarm water, do not scrub, and use a bland moisturiser on the surrounding skin while keeping products out of the eye. Do not share towels or cosmetics. A clinician can choose treatment appropriate for eyelid skin; standard body treatments may be unsuitable near the eye.

Seek same-day advice for significant eyelid swelling, eye pain, light sensitivity, discharge, fever, or any blurred or reduced vision. Get urgent help if swelling closes the eye, redness spreads quickly, or you develop facial swelling or breathing difficulty. Arrange review when the rash persists, recurs, or follows a product exposure that you cannot identify.
