Red rash on the inside of the arm: what to know

The inner arm is a flexural area where sweat, friction, and skin folds can aggravate inflammation. Itchy, dry, recurring patches may fit atopic dermatitis; a sharply localised rash may follow contact with a product, fabric, adhesive, or plant. A moist rash in a fold can be intertrigo, while a ring-like scaly border can suggest ringworm. A new medicine can cause a more widespread drug rash. The shape and history matter more than redness alone.

Stop suspected fragranced products and avoid tight sleeves while the skin settles. Clean gently, pat the area dry, and use a plain moisturiser without perfume. Keep the fold cool and dry, and do not scratch, scrub, or layer several medicated creams. Record new cosmetics, detergents, fabrics, plants, medicines, and activities. A clinician can choose treatment after checking whether the skin is dry, moist, scaly, cracked, or infected.

Get urgent help if the rash comes with breathing difficulty, facial swelling, faintness, skin peeling, purple spots, blistering over a large area, or fever with severe illness. Seek prompt review for rapidly expanding redness, increasing warmth or pain, pus, red streaks, or reduced arm movement. Arrange an appointment if the rash repeatedly returns, interferes with sleep, or does not improve after removing a suspected trigger.

Ask which features distinguish eczema, contact dermatitis, intertrigo, ringworm, and drug rash; whether a swab or skin test is appropriate; and which moisturiser or medicine fits the exact appearance.
