What should you know about red rash in armpit?

The skin fold can become irritated by deodorant, shaving, tight clothing, sweat, or rubbing. A rash that is itchy, sore, scaly, moist, ring-shaped, or spreading gives a clinician useful clues, but a photograph or description alone cannot confirm the cause.

Contact dermatitis can follow exposure to a new deodorant, soap, detergent, fabric, adhesive, or shaving product. Intertrigo is inflammation in a skin fold where heat, moisture, and friction combine. Do not scratch, scrub, share towels, or apply several medicated creams at once; some treatments can worsen a fungal rash or hide its features.

A clinician may examine nearby skin, ask about products and medicines, and choose treatment based on whether the pattern suggests inflammation, fungal infection, or another cause.

Seek urgent medical care for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, warmth and swelling, pus, red streaks, fever, or feeling very unwell. Get emergency help if the rash comes with swelling of the lips or face, trouble breathing, faintness, or widespread blistering or peeling.
