Red rash in the groin area that is not itchy

The groin is warm and exposed to sweat, rubbing, tight clothing, and personal-care products. Intertrigo may cause a smooth or moist red patch in a fold, sometimes with surface cracking. Ringworm often forms an expanding scaly edge, although symptoms vary. Contact dermatitis can follow a new soap, laundry product, pad, lubricant, or fabric. Psoriasis may affect the groin with a smoother red appearance than it has elsewhere, and heat rash can affect covered skin. Lack of itch does not identify the cause by itself.

Wash gently, rinse away product residue, and pat the area completely dry. Wear loose underwear and change after sweating; avoid shaving, fragranced products, and rubbing until the skin settles. Do not put steroid, antifungal, or combination creams on genital skin without advice, because the wrong product can mask the appearance or irritate delicate skin. Keep a record of new products, sexual exposures, exercise, and whether the rash crosses the fold. A clinician can distinguish irritation from conditions such as Intertrigo or Ringworm and select treatment safely.

Get prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, marked swelling, severe pain, fever, pus, open sores, blisters, skin darkening, or pain when urinating. Seek urgent help for facial swelling or breathing difficulty after a product or medicine. Arrange an examination if the rash persists, recurs, involves the genitals, follows a new medicine, or could have followed sexual contact; avoid sexual skin-to-skin contact until assessed when infection is possible.
