What should you know about red rash around mouth and nose?

Saliva, nasal discharge, frequent wiping, masks, shaving, toothpaste, lip products, cosmetics, and fragranced creams can irritate the skin around the mouth and nose. Contact dermatitis may itch, sting, scale, or swell after an exposure. Atopic dermatitis can cause dry, itchy facial patches, while psoriasis may create a persistent defined scale. Cracking in the folds beside the nose can become irritated by moisture and friction. Ringworm may form a scaly expanding edge. Note whether the rash circles the mouth, sits in the nostril folds, follows a product, or includes crusting, blisters, or pus. Facial appearance alone does not establish the cause.

Wash with lukewarm water and a mild fragrance-free cleanser, then pat rather than rub. Apply a simple moisturiser to dry outer skin and protect it from saliva or repeated wiping with gentle dabbing. Pause new cosmetics, exfoliants, fragranced products, and lip preparations until the pattern is clear. Avoid picking, squeezing, and using steroid or antibiotic creams without professional guidance, particularly close to the nose and mouth. Keep towels, pillowcases, and razors personal if infection is being considered.

Seek urgent help for facial swelling with breathing difficulty, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, extensive blistering, skin peeling, or sores inside the mouth or nose. Arrange prompt assessment for fever, pus, honey-coloured crusts, painful swelling, or redness near the eye. Book a routine review when the rash lasts, keeps returning, cracks, or fails to improve after likely irritants are removed.
