What should you know about red rash around eyes?

Eyelid skin is thin and can react to eye makeup, makeup remover, creams, sunscreen, hair products transferred by the hands, nail products, contact-lens solutions, or airborne particles. Contact dermatitis may itch, sting, swell, or flake. Atopic dermatitis can affect the eyelids alongside dry, itchy skin elsewhere. Psoriasis may leave a defined scaly patch. Redness limited to the skin is different from a red, painful eye or changes in vision. Rubbing can worsen inflammation and introduce infection. The side affected, timing after a product, discharge, light sensitivity, and pain help a clinician distinguish skin irritation from an eye problem.

Stop new or nonessential products near the eyes and rinse away suspected irritants with clean water. Do not rub, scratch, use leftover prescription creams, or put skin products into the eye.
