Red itchy rash all over the body: what to know

A rash that began after a new medicine, supplement, food, soap, or detergent may reflect a reaction to that exposure. Dry, inflamed skin can occur with Atopic Dermatitis, while direct irritation can cause Contact Dermatitis. Heat and trapped sweat may produce Heat Rash. Scaly plaques can occur with Psoriasis, and an expanding ring-like patch can suggest Ringworm. Severe night itching or affected household members raises the possibility of Scabies. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Stop using newly introduced fragranced products on the skin and wash gently with lukewarm water. Apply a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser while the skin is slightly damp, keep nails short, and use cool compresses instead of scratching. Wear loose breathable clothing and avoid overheating. Photograph the rash and note when it started, medicines taken, recent travel, illness, and anyone else with itching. Do not start or stop a prescribed medicine without timely advice from the prescriber.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or a rash with blistering, skin peeling, painful sores, or involvement of the eyes or mouth. Arrange prompt medical assessment for fever, marked tenderness, rapidly spreading redness, pus, or feeling very unwell. A widespread rash after a new medicine deserves same-day advice even when it seems mild.

Ask whether the distribution fits a reaction, infection, or inflammatory condition; whether any recent medicine should be reviewed; which cleanser and moisturiser suit your skin; and what changes should trigger urgent reassessment.
