Red eyes with discharge: what to know

Sticky yellow or green discharge that returns after wiping can occur with Conjunctivitis. Watery discharge with intense itching and symptoms in both eyes is more consistent with Allergic Conjunctivitis. Clear watering may come from irritation, dryness, or a viral illness. Discharge alone cannot identify the cause, and redness can have several explanations. Contact-lens use matters because infections affecting the cornea can become serious more quickly.

Wash your hands before and after touching the eye. Gently clean discharge with fresh cotton or a clean damp cloth, using a separate part for each wipe. Avoid sharing towels, pillowcases, cosmetics, or eye drops, and discard eye makeup used during the episode. Stop contact lenses until a clinician says they are safe to use. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether supportive care or prescribed treatment is suitable; do not use someone else’s drops.

Get prompt assessment for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, marked swelling, a foreign body, or redness in a contact-lens wearer. Seek urgent care if vision changes suddenly or pain is severe. Arrange review if discharge is heavy, symptoms are worsening, or the problem is not settling.
