Red eyes and scarlet fever: what to know

Scarlet Fever is linked to infection with the bacteria that cause Strep Throat. People with scarlet fever often have a sudden Fever, painful Sore Throat, swollen neck glands, and a fine rough rash that can feel like sandpaper. Redness or watering of the eyes may occur for a separate reason, such as irritation or conjunctivitis, and should not be used alone to identify scarlet fever. A clinician may examine the throat and decide whether testing is appropriate.

Arrange a clinical review if red eyes occur with fever, sore throat, swollen glands, or a new rash. Until you are assessed, rest, drink fluids, avoid rubbing the eyes, and wash hands frequently. Do not share cups, utensils, towels, or cosmetics. Use antibiotics only when prescribed; the appropriate medicine depends on the examination and testing. Follow the prescribed course exactly if treatment is started.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing or swallowing, drooling, severe weakness, confusion, dehydration, eye pain, light sensitivity, or a change in vision. Prompt assessment is also needed if a rash spreads quickly, fever persists, or symptoms worsen rather than improve.
