Red eyes and runny nose: what to know

Itchy, watery eyes with repeated sneezing and a clear runny nose commonly occur with Allergic Rhinitis. Dust mites, pets, or seasonal triggers can cause this pattern. A sore throat, cough, tiredness, or fever points more toward a respiratory illness such as Common Cold, Influenza, or COVID-19. Facial pressure, thick nasal drainage, or symptoms that persist after an initial illness may fit Sinusitis. Redness can also result from rubbing, dryness, smoke, or contact-lens irritation, so it does not identify one cause by itself.

Wash your hands, avoid rubbing your eyes, and use a clean cool compress for comfort. Rinse away visible allergens from the face and change pillowcases if dust or pet exposure seems connected. Drink fluids and rest when you have cold-like symptoms. Do not share towels, cosmetics, or eye drops. Contact-lens wearers should remove lenses and seek advice before wearing them again. A pharmacist or clinician can help choose treatment based on whether the pattern is allergic, infectious, or irritation-related.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred vision, marked swelling, an eye injury, or trouble moving the eye. Seek urgent help if vision changes suddenly or the eye becomes severely painful. Contact a clinician when fever is significant, breathing symptoms are worsening, symptoms are not settling, or you are concerned about COVID-19 exposure.

Ask whether the pattern fits allergy, infection, or irritation; whether you should test for a respiratory infection; and which eye or nasal products are suitable with your medicines and contact-lens use.
