Red eyes for days: what to know

Redness may continue when the eye surface is dry, exposed to smoke or dust, or repeatedly rubbed. It can also occur with allergy, when itching and watering are prominent, or conjunctivitis, which may bring discharge and spread between people. A small burst blood vessel can look dramatic while causing little discomfort, but the appearance alone does not establish the reason. Note whether the problem affects one eye or both and whether symptoms are improving.

Pause contact-lens wear and avoid eye makeup until the redness has cleared or you have been examined. Wash hands before touching the face, do not share towels, and gently clean discharge with clean water. Reduce exposure to smoke, strong air-conditioning, and dusty environments. A cool compress can soothe itching or irritation. Pharmacy eye drops may be suitable for some causes, but avoid repeatedly using redness-masking drops without professional advice.

Book an eye or medical review when redness lasts for days without clear improvement, especially if it is recurrent. Seek urgent care for eye pain, light sensitivity, reduced or blurred vision, severe headache with nausea, a swollen eyelid, a foreign body that will not wash out, or any chemical or other injury. Contact-lens wearers with pain or vision change need prompt assessment.

Ask what examination is needed and whether you should use drops, avoid work or school, or take steps to reduce spread. Tell the clinician about discharge, itching, pain, visual changes, contact lenses, recent illness, allergies, and possible exposure to chemicals or debris.
